Women’s House (1998–2002) by artist Sanja Iveković is a work that highlights a feminist-political discourse, focusing on issues of societal disregard and gender-based violence present in post-communist Croatia.
The theme of Women’s House is the experiences of women whose lives were shattered by violence and who sought refuge in “women’s houses”—shelters in four different cities: Zagreb, Luxembourg, Bangkok, and Podgorica. The project began in Croatia, and behind the broader research on violence against women lies the story of the rapes that occurred during the war in the former Yugoslavia.
